I “met” Kristian Fanselow through my private Facebook group, Fashion Photographers Connect! I’m so happy I have started this group because I have met so many talented and NICE photographers through it! I love it when the members share their recent work, ask questions about our individual processes & workflows or equipment recommendations! It was on this page that I first saw Kristian’s work and I was immediately blown away! I love his eye! He obviously has a strong command of his shoots, he has a strong connection with his models and his lighting is next-level professional. This is someone who obviously loves fashion and captures it with such a dynamic finesse! I asked the group if anyone was interested in sharing their work on this Member Showcase and Kristian sent me a recent shoot of his. Before we get into his words and work, I urge you to take a look at Kristian’s work and follow him on social media. All the links are below as well! Now, enjoy his work and his words:

I have been interested in visual image creation and composition for a long time but originally I worked as a sound engineer for television for 10 years. In 2016 I decided to turn my passion into my profession, bought my first SLR camera, and started taking portraits. At that time I did not think much about concepts, hair styling, and make-up. Nevertheless, I wanted to improve my skills and thereby the quality of my pictures quickly - learning by doing! I started to work with professional make-up and hair stylists who helped me to realize my creative ideas and pursue my personal goals.

I always take my digital photos in color and decide during postproduction whether a picture will be black and white or color as a final result. For me, black and white photography is really captivating, because it is so timeless.

Forming a creative unit with a great team of make-up artists and stylists is what fascinates me the most as a photographer and my job in general.

In my learning process, I quickly realized that an interesting picture is not created in but in front of the camera and that the camera is only a replica of reality.

And a few words about this shoot with Anastasia:

I met Anastasia at a lookbook shoot and was amazed at her face and expression.

In short, I called her agency and quickly organized a test shoot for the next day.

According to my first impression of her, I wanted to shoot her as pure and natural as possible, without disturbing make-up, styling, or light. I didn't want any obtrusive factors to distract from her natural look. Therefore I positioned her in front of a black background and worked with soft, natural window light only.

These kinds of pictures are very appreciated by model agencies as they show the model in her most natural way.  Her poses and facial expressions were always on point and it was a real pleasure for me to work with her.
